Ask not what your community can do for you...

On January 20, 1961,  John F. Kennedy gave his inaugural address to the American people and the world. In his speech, he said: "ask not what your country can do for you—ask what you can do for your country."

This quote cannot be more relevant today on a local level as well as a national level and is very apparent with the "occupy" movement going on throughout the country. The people involved are absolutely right in saying…I'm not going to take it any more! The National "Bank Transfer Day" was started by one very unhappy bank customer and has grown nationwide. People who are taking their money out of big banks and putting it in Credit Unions are protesting for all the right reasons. How can these banks ask for and receive a bailout in 2008 and then turn around and justify squeezing another $60 from their debit card customers? I can't say that I blame anyone from flocking to the credit unions. After all, credit unions are owned by their members and are not-for-profit.

This brings up a good point. If half the population would spent $50 each month in locally owned independent businesses, it would generate $42.6 billion in revenue. (see The 3/50 project http://www.the350project.net/home.html) How's that for doing something for your country and your community too?

I'd like to thank the Lafayette community for the support that we have received. Thanks for spending your hard earned money at an independently owned business. Your purchases keep businesses like mine around and it supports our community by keeping those dollars local. You rock Lafayette!
